They'd had really good rains in Bushmanland and these on Areb were huge. L.marmorata again?

This is always nice to see. It was in view of the Orange river at Beauvallon.

Those could be L. karasmontana ssp bella. L. marmorata looks like the right name. They vary a lot but aren't blessed with any subspecific names other than the very distinctive var elisae.

What is the Avonia, does anyone know?

Beauvallon is a long way inland, isn't it? The Fenestrarias seem to like it well enough.

The basic requirements for Fenestraria in the wild are a fine gritty/sandy substrate and mist. These conditions encourage it to grow on the coast from southern Namibia to well south of Port Nolloth (the orange-flowered form is the most southerly). However, the required conditions can occur quite a way into the Orange River Valley and most nights the mist rolls in from the sea and up the valley past Beauvallon. I once spent the night in a sleeping bag on a citrus farm near Beauvallon and woke up in the middle of the night dripping with moisture! Incidentally it is nice to see that Fenestraria has survived the ostrich farming in that area.

Just the ubiquitous A.papyracea ssp namaensis Ian.......and Beauvallon is only about 20km from Alexander Bay and no distance for the fog which regularly forms over the river. These we on an unspoilt hill behind a guesthouse which was rich in many other succulent genera.
