Yavia cryptocarpa flowering!!!

Post by Diane » Tue May 24, 2016 4:14 pm

I was doing some watering this morning, and suddenly noticed my Yavia cryptocarpa was in flower!!! This is clone 22 (I think, we did have another which bit the dust, so I hope the label is for this plant.) In all the years I've had it, never a single bud has appeared, so this came as a big (and pleasant) surprise.

Looks lovely, always nice to still get a surprise when you get a 'first' flowering.

Will it be worth trying to set seed on it ?

Mine flowered it's second year from BCSS, set empty fruit and then just dried up on the graft. As you have had it for years Diane evidently you have found how to keep it going. Flower colour looks identical to the one I had.

That is indeed a nice surprise Diane, to see a flower when you don't expect it.
Beautiful plant !

Hi Larry,

It's still pretty uncommon, I have been after another for a while, but few seem to be propagating them at the moment. For it's history see:-

http://web.archive.org/web/200709271346 ... /yavia.pdf

I believe Halda even transferred it to Blossfeldia, but it does not seem to have any close relationship with that genus, just a superficially looks similar. A white flowered form has been mentioned, but I have never seen any others illustrated than with the characteristic pink flower.
