Cristate forms

Post by Mujician »

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone had any info on the cristate forms of cacti/succulents. Are they naturally occurring or have they popped up in peoples collections due to selective breeding/hybridisation? Do mesembs have cristate forms? How easy are they to come by? I guess generally they aren't as common as their 'normal' counterparts.
Two cristates I'd really like to own are Lophophore Williamsi, and Stapelia Grandiflora. What is the likelihood of coming across these in the UK?
Many thanks, Ben

I think one of my mamms is going cristate/monstrose. I'm quite disappointed as I dont like them. But I'll see how it turns out.

Is it possible to buy seeds for cristate forms, or can they only be reproduced with cuttings? Is there anyone specialising in keeping cristate, or monstrose forms?

I think the answers would be no, no and yes.

You can't breed for cristation as far as I know. You can of course create clones with cuttings, though not all species will make offsets.

Cristation occurs in nature though no definite reason has been discovered for why it happens.

If you want cristate versions of those species your best bet is probably ebay or online cactus shops. They might cost a bit though.

As KarlR said, such plants are usually pricey. I'm quite fond on weirdos (cristates, monstroses, variegated plants), but due to thin wallet collecting them goes very slowly :) :( Good thing is that they sell easily, so each year I graft a few of them and get few more in return. Still, slooooow... There's so many of them out there :)

I personally hate the ruddy things, and if one of mine went cristate it would probably be compost fodder

So Mujician, all you have to do is to pray (hard) for Greenlarry's plants :)
