I aquired a cutting of H. herminiae this time last year, and it has thrived in the propagator, with additional lighting, ever since.
I assume to get it to flower, I will need to rest it this winter
Does anyone know if the triggers are temperature, day length, or a combination? I've heard it can be tricky, so I want to stress it as little as necessary, but it would be great to give it a winter regime which leads to flowers in the spring.

Re: Hatiora herminiae - tips for flowering
You are doing well to keep it alive!
I grow mine in a mesh pot so it can dry out rapidly, and water it every day. It's in a North facing window so does not get direct sun; it had just one flower this year...
I suspect day length is the trigger, as it does not get cold in the house.

Re: Hatiora herminiae - tips for flowering
Thanks Ralph.
It's quite rampant really, which makes me reluctant to change the regime, given reports of how tricky it is.
Although, looking at a lot of photos, maybe it was incorrectly as H. herminiae named anyway, quite a lot of the stems are club/bottle shaped.

Sounds more like Hatiora salicornioides, which can be quite rampant - mine is 50 cm high on a windowsill in the house. H. herminiae doesn't have bottle-shaped joints.esp wrote:Thanks Ralph.

You'll soon tell if it flowers. H. herminiae has pink flowers, H. salicornioides has yellow flowers.

Re: Hatiora herminiae - tips for flowering
I have a couple of little seedlings of herminiae sown from the BCSS seedlist last year. They look very feeble and took a long time to produce any proper growth, but seem to be slowly growing now, still in their propagator.
Re: Hatiora herminiae - tips for flowering
We are growing Hatiora herminiae for many years without any problem. They flower in the living room (minimum 18 Celsius), in the greenhouse (minimum 5-6 Celsius). It seems that flowering is better if they get more light. Alos the substrate does not seem to make much difference. Organic gives a more loosely grow, mineral substrate more compact grow. Soil should be loose (not compact). Cuttings will root easily if they are put on the ground and sprayed with water now and then (no need to put them in the ground).
