I would agree with Suzanne, and Tony, that looks like a plant within the C. colademononis range , the plant becomes more hairy and soft with age, the photo below shows the golden sharp spines at the base of the stem, and the second photo of the same plant shows the long soft hairs on the more mature stem, but the sharp spines are still there underneath , so as Tony says it can only be stroked one way.

Here's mine
Plant one from ELK. Pot 2 is a few seedlings grown from BCSS seed I can't remember the age of them but there is some variety I can't remember where the third plant came from

Hi all, I have a grafted specimen given to me many years ago. The hairs all over the body are extremely soft and can be stroked in any direction without meeting any spines what so ever. As what has been said, seems vary variable. Cheers ps have a pic somewhere have to look for it.
