Repotting Rebutias

Post by Chris L »

When is the best time to repot Rebutias?

Now, before they start growing flower buds, or after they have flowered?

Would they be OK being repotted, now, into bone dry compost? I am thinking 30:30:30 JI:Grit:CL.

They are small plants in 2.5 inch pots - and they have been in them for more years than they should have.

If you're planning to use bone dry compost you can pot them on during the winter with confidence. I often re-pot cacti in the winter as there is usually more time on your hands than in summer. You need to make sure when you start watering, that the compost gets really wet. If it is completely dry it can be reluctant to soak up water. However, with a decent amount of grit and cat litter in the mix you shouldn't have any problem with watering.

I agree with Rod. No problem with repotting now. Personally, I see no benefit in using so much cat litter. I use a 40/40/20 mix which contains sufficient cat litter to mop up excess water.

I've de-potted about half of my Rebutias this morning. Pleasantly surprised with the roots and their general health. I think only one has dried up completely.

Most of them are in 2.5 inch optipot pots and those seem to have done better than those in 2inch bef pots. I am going to most of them back into 2.5 inch pots.

Cleaned off all the old seed pots too. Not kept them, as there would be no saying what hybrids might germinate.

I dont really like using pots smaller than 2.5" as they tend to dry out too quickly...

Your plants certainly look fine.
