An Avonia getting a caudex
This is supposedly Avonia harveyi from society seed. It now has a tiny caudex but, but continues to bear little resemblance to the described species.

I caught a flower! Not the hottest day there's ever been, very wet this morning, warm and humid in the greenhouse.

Re: An Avonia getting a caudex
Very interesting to see photos of this still poorly known Anacampseros. With rounded stipular scales without any brown vein, there does seem to be an identity problem here. It would be worth checking the descriptions of a couple of similar Williamson pink-flowered Anacs, A. gariepensis and A. lavbleckiana. The first has more stamens. These are small plants and without a habitat location, a dissection of the parts will be needed for identification plus seed photos probably.
Best wishes,

There's little doubt what it should be from its data (JVT09082 SW Brandberg) but the scales don't follow the description too closely. Seeds are as expected. The tuber is small. Some other examples in cultivation appear similar to mine.

Do you know the original source of the seed Ian - where the BCSS obtained it?

Mine is from Mesa Garden seed, same year as it was offered in BCSS seedlist, and matches the type description very well.

That one in the corner looks more like an Avonia epithelanthioides...

Ian's & Ali's don't look like the same species to me. The stipules are very different.

Re: An Avonia getting a caudex
The brown vein on the stipule doesnt seem to be a very reliable characteristic at least in cultivation. My plants have some scales that are veined and some that aren't even on the same branch. The stipules are consitently pointed at the apex however. Frustratingly I have yet to catch it flowering again since that first flower.
