Opuntia ficus indica

Post by RobertoDeMolero »

I bought a O.f.i a year ago. Very little, from a cutting.
I remember in Spain they would grow quite quick and full of fruits, yes I know, we are not in Spain.
Could anyone that has tried them tell me how to properly look after it in the UK?
Thank you!!

Fairly easy cactus to grow. Standard compost.
It will grow fast if given a big pot and plenty of feed and water in the summer.
They need plenty of light and will elongate and fall over if they don't get it.

I've seen them flower and fruit in the UK at about 4-6 feet high, but perhaps they will fruit smaller, I don't know.
Easy to germinate from seed also.

I had a thread here recently about the most common and rarest cacti in the world. It came out on top as one of the most common in the wild and in cultivation. It has spread like wildfire in places like Australia. A spineless form is available that is used for cattle feed.
