Enthusiasm
This is Pyrrhocactus marayesensis. It is sometimes seen as Pyrrhocactus (Eriosyce) umadeave var marayesensis. It resembles P. umadeave as an adult, but is considered to be a type of P. bulbocalyx and flowers much younger than any P. umadeave ever would. Lots of flowers by the looks of things! This is still in a 2" pot. What colour do you think the flowers will be?

Re: Enthusiasm
I would go with yellow too.
It can't be related to Umadeave - it would be long gone by now! I believe Umadeave to be one of those species that are virtually impossible in our conditions. Considering its habitat I don't find that too much of a surprise.

I'll say it's pink.

Re: Enthusiasm
E. umadeave is quite manageable in cultivation, although slow. It is difficult to germinate although occasionally some combination of the seed and the conditions combines and they pop up like cress. Despite thinking I know what I'm doing, I tried some again this year and got zero germination. I still haven't had flowers though, and my oldest plants are approaching 10 years.cactuspip wrote:I would go with yellow too.

Re: Enthusiasm
This is my P. umadeave; I find it likes to remain dry and does well in a mineral mix with akadama and pumice. Lost a lot of roots when I moved up to this 10x9 cm pot so it wont need repotting anytime in the future.cactuspip wrote:I would go with yellow too.

Edit: I forgot to mention I always draw blood when I handle this, the spines move around a lot even if I touch it the spine contracts and pricks my skin. In that sense it is hunting you when threatened

Re: Enthusiasm
Well last year, against all expectation, the flowers were pink. Maybe they'll be a more normal colour this year?
