This one is up to something

Post by agavedave »

Spotted this a couple of days ago, didn't register until now. It looks like it may be flowering but going on previous clones,it's a bit on the small side.

Best Regards
Dave

I don't know what name you got that as but it strongly resembles Agave boldinghiana, a precocious flowering clone of which has been in circulation for some while.

Sorry folks, I forgot to mention, It's polycantha a sibling clone of the one that flowered last year.

Some pictures of that one here

Paul,

I have boldinghiana as well. It seems to stay a bit lighter green and probably a bit more tender than this one. Sticking to 'leaf and teeth' it's hard to separate them when small. The plant that my boldinghiana came from flowered at about 18-20 cm diameter. I'll post a pic of that later tonight. I can't find the info a.t.m, but I thought boldinghiana flowers were yellowish with some branching on the stem?

I can't remember what colour the flowers were on my boldinghiana now, it was some years ago. But now you added all the other info it makes more sense. That is a cracking good clone of polyacantha (obscura now) you have there - those teeth are lovely and dark!

As you say, leaves and teeth, there are a number of species that look almost identical. Some obscura with weaker teeth look just like some forms of mitis, sometimes chiapensis can look almost exactly the same. Plus boldinhiana, plus another Caribbean one antillarum. So confusing when confronted by something in a pot with no idea of provenance!

Attached is a picture of boldinghiana for comparison.

I got this one from Eau Brink as a basal offset from one that finished flowering.

Until plants in habitat are found with labels on them just going on leaf form is always going to be a risky approach to assigning names.

Thanks for the update Dave, an Agave flower is always exciting to see, although rather a mixed blessing.
