i order 80 seeds from CACTUS - HOBBY BRNO .
these are my seedling sown in 2017/6/9
germination start in a week later 6/16,in the end(6/22) i have 53 out of 80 seed.
i am happy with this score.
they grow slower then i expect i am wondering why? . my green house is now 38~40 C in mid day 30~35 C in night.
pretty hot. often has tropical afternoon thunderstorm.
i keep these seedling in lower shelf so the light is softer and inside a humid box.
i also notice they barely have root,i seen no taproot as other cactus seedling would. wondering is that normal.

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling
Very nice! They definitely don't seem to be growing too slowly, though the temperatures may be a bit on the high side. In my experience the roots of baby Brazilians seem to be somewhat weak, but I could be wrong.
If you are at all interested in trading or selling a few seedlings of this species at some point when they're a bit bigger, please let me know. A friend and I have been extremely interested in this species, but it is always sold out when we order it from the rare seed list that has it.

i do planing selling some.but since we live in different country, the only practical way to trade is seed.mdpillet wrote:Very nice! don;t want to mess with Customs quarantine.
a portion of seedling is defected ie: has no growth point and just die automatically. only 48(plus 4 grafted) remain now.
i graft 4 seedling on Pereskiaopsis. I think Micranthocereus bloom in spring ?
so the fastest possible time i can harvest seed is 2018 spring.
i am more interesting in exchanging.
FYI i bought 80 seed, cost me 16EU.in my country 2EU can buy one stander size lunch.

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling
graft seedling look funny.they turn red and has erect spine.
grafted in 2017/6/25, took about 2 week to form graft union and start growth.
once started the speed is impressive.

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling
I'm not 100% sure yet that what you have in your pictures actually is M. hofackerianus.
This species grows very tall and spindly quite quickly, and also develops a decent tuberous root system from which it can regenerate sometimes if the main stem dies back.
Mine typically flower fairly freely throughout the year with a few rest periods in between, it's not unusual to have it flowering pretty much every 2 months throughout the year to some degree or another. I've been able to produce small quantities of seed from it for a couple of years now.
It's very hard to grow from seed on it's own roots, because due to being so thin and spindly it's incredibly prone to just drying out, scorch is enough to kill an entire section of the stem rather than merely marking one side of it because the stem is so thin when young. It's not unusual to get lovely 10cm - 15cm high seedlings after 9 months only to lose them over your first winter because of having the dilemma of watering them and having them etiolate stupidly into easily snapped 30cm high 3mm wide failures that die easily as a result, or have them dry out altogether and die that way. You really need to keep them under lights over the first winter if you have crappy day lengths like we have in the winter in the UK so you can keep watering them a bit, or simply just graft them quite young onto something like Pereskiopsis which is difficult because they are such tiny spindly things which makes them very hard to graft.

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling
thanks for advice IanW, prone to under water, really tall and thin, got it !
i just don;t know why they grow so slow. according to all the research i did they should be a fast grower.
the on;y explain i have is it is too hot in my green house for them.
i live in Taiwan so winter is not a issue at all. i am sure the tempter is sufficient in winter(always above 10C).
here is the day light length of my city.
it;s even longer in winter because we do't rain in winter here
176.6 140.6 149.9 137.8 158.7 160.1 199.6 178.7 175.8 203.7 179.4 182.3
total 2043.2 hr/per year

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling Solved
some up date on the seedling.
I lose about 1/3 of seedling. it has been too dry in july. Water twice per week is not enough.
I think it is because i use over-shallow container.
Exactly the problem IanW said.
I change the method in August by putting the container in a big tray fill with water.i think they like it.
temperature drop a little now. it's 38C in day 30C in night

Re: My Micranthocereus hofackerianus seedling
Temperature here is finally dropping, night temp is now around 26C
sun set at 5:00pm
these little baster finally show some significant growth. i can;t be more happy
i set up a grow box with cooling and light set to 25C +-5
these are the one inside doing well.
i am now pretty sure they like mild Temperature and constant water supply. over dry will stop growing.
they are very hard to keep in subtropical country.i already lose half of my seedling.
from 53 to 22 left. 16own-root 2own-root in grow box 4 grafted
hope they grow better in winter.
