Succulent monocot

Well I'm pretty sure its a monocot and I think its succulent. Not really my thing. So what is it really?

So many were killed in January and December 2010 that large ones have been an uncommon sight round here although there were lots around before then. It's good to see them becoming reestablished in gardens (and carparks), though P. tenax isn't as favoured over the P. cookianum hybrids as it was, probably because it gets big. In the right place it's one of my favourite 'exotic' plants.

A neighbour of mine dug his out after it died back following that severe winter a few years ago. No mean feat [emoji51]However others that were left have slowly grown back
