You may find a small specimen on Ebay from time to time, I have had this one for 6yrs and it was only 3cm diameter when I bought it.
Into all sorts of exotic plants but with only having a conservatory I prefer to buy small young plants and miniature cacti.

There are a couple of actual plants on Ebay at present if you would prefer plants to seeds.

I sowed Dioscorea elephantipes in February/March and they are already quite big, so if you go the seed route I'd recommend keeping them well watered and well fertilized so they grow faster. Germination was quite good at about 20-25 degrees C. I sowed them on coir.

Too bad shipping to the UK is probably not worth it, because I have 20+ small Dioscoreas & I'd happily share...

Koehres service is excellent in my experience.

I think what Terry is correct, they grow when they want to.
My large plants are on an outside bench and have been getting a sun tan & drench depending on the weather conditions in Mk, the female is starting to vine now, male still asleep ( typical! )

varied collection of succulents and cacti but I especially like Euphorbia's, Ariocarpus and variegated agaves.

You may try to look for them at your local nursery, they showed up (at least here in Portugal) in vast numbers this spring at dirt-cheap prices (2,50€ with thimble sized caudex). You should train your eye, though, because at that size they are quite different from the adults.
