Re: My New Greenhouse is Finally Ready

The glasshouse itself was about 1/3 of the cost. Civil engineering work, glasshouse erection, and kitting the glasshouse out was the rest. The greenhouse was built on a sloping site, so there was quite a lot of soil to move, and retaining walls to build, electricity / water / Ethernet to be connected up, and a new oil tank and oil pipe, so all of that also cost almost 1/3 of the total price too.

Anyway, the final cost was about £160k. Fortunately, the house here was much cheaper than it would have been in some other parts of the UK, so what I saved on the house, I used to pay for the greenhouse. As a bonus it is also a beautiful part of the country to live in.

It's my dream come true. Winning the lottery would not have been any different.

Cactusgirl wrote:Amazing set up. We are currently building the base for my 16x8 greenhouse and I thought that was massive but your greenhouse totally dwarfs that! (But then I have only got about 40 plants at present!)
That's bigger than the 10x8 I persuaded my dad to build, when I was a schoolboy with a few cacti on my bedroom windowsill. Until just a couple of months ago, my collection was in a 10 x 20.

Just be careful not to do what I did before moving, and cram too many plants in. It happens all too easily, as there's "always room for just one more".

Well done, Ralph. One of life's great decisions and no doubt you'll be glad that the majority of the thinking and worrying about the project will soon settle down.

I retired early and moved to a less expensive part of the country in order to bolster my pension and to pay for what was needed to fulfill the next stage of life for Mrs T and I. Mind you, a 40ft x 22ft g/hse wasn't really large enough but Mrs T rarely ventures into the place and as for her planting seeds in there it would only be to grow Harvey's Bristol Cream plants.

Well done. I hope to have the opportunity to visit you and your magnificent collection one day.

Well I have recovered from the surprise of your 'New Supergreenhouse', it helps that your wife is interested in plants, you are lucky. Although I'm not sure I would like to share my G/H's  with him indoors, he is much tidier than me .

That's an amazing set up you have now, I love the watering system, plants like a good soak and so easy to drain off the excess. The staging looks very sturdy, impressive all round (tu) .

Nice shopping on the Euphorbia's, I don't know all of them but Rikus is a very good grower and propagator.
The Euphorbia society has a meeting at ELK if people are interested.
