Seconds out, round 2

Post by iann »

Lithops pseudotruncatella should be mostly finished flowering now, although mine are still dragging on with the dull August. Wouldn't be surprised if some of them linger into September.

The second round usually begins with L. gracilidelineata and here is the first one. It did just about open yesterday, the first time I think.

No var gracilidelineata open yet. Ssp brandbergensis always seems just slightly earlier for me. Flowers are fully open now.

This is one of the late L. pseudotruncatella, a strongly-clustering "Pulmonuncula". Mostly these are single, at this age anyway, but this one has crammed six heads into an 8cm pot.

It is exceptional a L. pseudotruncatella with 6 heads

Yes, ssp groendrayensis is a late one for me also, just showing buds now. L. gesinae I might put on a list of early starters, but not this early!

Some forms of L. pseudotruncatella will clump up. Here's my biggest one last year, more than six heads. Usually quite slow to clump though, and many forms hardly divide at all. Never seen a double ssp groendrayensis!

I like ssp archerae, always seems to look pretty. I'll try to get a picture of mine in flower.

So I turned to the books. On ssp archerae, Cole says "heads up to 10 or more, mostly 1 or 2" and Hammer says "slowly clustering". On ssp groendrayenesis, Cole says "1, exceptionally 2" and Hammer says "single-bodied" On ssp dendritica (Pulmonuncula isn't described separately), Cole says "up to 4, but seldom more than 1" and Hammer says "usually single, rarely double" and "flowers appearing a few weeks later than those of var pseudotruncatella". Maybe my strange plant accidentally crossed with L. werneri :)

First Lithops flowers here were among a batch of cv.Talisman seedlings, they started two or three weeks ago, and we think four of them have flowered so far.
A bunch of L.schwantesii's have also flowered or are in flower at the moment, different vars and C numbers among them.
L.pseudotruncatella is normally the first to flower for us but came in at number three this year.
Today gracilidelineata ssp.brandbergensis joined the party.

Think that is all at the moment and its too late to check now.

will try to update tomorrow maybe.
