What a wopper!

Post by Smel »

Hi All,
When I saw this plant in flower, that was my thought "What a wopper" I can't think of having anything this size on a Succulent, especially a Messem! Stapelias have large flowers... So I got the camera and took a few pics, then entered details, as I usually do (Sad or what) It was about 75mm wide, but today a few days later it now measures 105mm almost hinding the plant and certainly it's pot (2.75" Sq).

The plant is PLEIOSPILOS COMPACTUS ssp. CANUS grown from seed in 2013. Just thought to share, enjoy!

Regards

Mel.

Hi Aiko,
Just checked it's not down as BCSS seed, so yes it must have come from you! Well done.

This one does have huge flowers. Did you take a sniff?

Interesting that my plant with the same name is quite different.

Hi Iann,
Yes I think you have grown your plant a bit hard, but mine may have been pampered just a bit! Wait until it's winter and it in a cold grrenhouse, it's survived so far.

No I did'ent give it a sniff and I don't think I'll be going out to the greenhouse now, will try tomorrow in daylight, what should I smell??

Thanks for replying and letting me see your plant.
Regards.

I have a plant, which I tentatively identified as this species, that resembles more Mel's form than Ian's, with stronger keels to the leaves. I bought it on a florist or garden centre, can't remember anymore, several years ago. It's a good match for your plants except for the choice of hairdresser. May I assume it is indeed P. compactus subsp. canus?
Here it is in January 2016, on a particularly bad hair day, sitting in its 7cm pot.

I can't really ID these reliably, but I know that P. compactus is by far the least compact Pleiospilos :) Ssp canus is supposed to be 12-locular vs 10-locular for ssp compactus, but everything else is highly variable.

No, well done to you!

I see in the background a P. willowmorensis. Probably also originating from me? If so, you sure grow them quite fast to this size!
