Re: That unspoken Auction site
And wealthy Chinese who are only narrowly outbid by the Koreans. :-)
Fact is, there's a huge demand for C&S in the Far East, especially China now they are getting richer, and not so many plants available, particularly named plants. Look at Taobao (the nearest equivalent to eBay in China, although with fixed prices), and you will see silly prices on many things, such as Othonnas, Tylecodons, Haworthias. It's not just Conophytums. When I have bought a few plants while in China, e.g. a few unusual, but not hard to grow, Crassulas for a few quid each, you would be amazed at what tiny scraps of plants they send.
On the other hand, on occasion you can find some plants at silly prices there. I was offered a box of (seed grown) caudiciform Monadeniums, in flower, for 30p each, with about 100 in the box. I was sorely tempted...

Re: That unspoken Auction site
I have a very nice compact caudiciform Adromischus. I should really put it online only to see if it can reduce my mortgage by a few percentages...

Re: That unspoken Auction site
I think we had better play this down, before some media types come to the silly conclusion that the few hundred plants in people's greenhouses are worth a sizeable chunk of a million quid, and we all get break-ins.

It has already happened a few times, mostly in Japan and with Haworthia collections (the ones I heard of, at least)...ralphrmartin wrote:I think we had better play this down, before some media types come to the silly conclusion that the few hundred plants in people's greenhouses are worth a sizeable chunk of a million quid, and we all get break-ins.

Yes, but those Haworthia collections probably were worth a fortune!
