Re: Micranthocereus auri azureus
Nice plant Richaud, but certainly NOT Micranthocereus auri-azureus.
As far as I can see it looks like Micranthocereus polyanthus.
Plants of M. auri-azureus have more goldenyellow spines and the flowers dont have the white in the center.
They have a more uniform colour.
Peter.

Re: Micranthocereus auri azureus
Thank Peter for the correction (I bought this plant at ELK ) but are you sure for polyanthus ?
I have this plant and she is more woolly
flaviflorus maybe ??

Re: Micranthocereus auri azureus
Richaud,
I'm quite sure about the name Micranthocereus polyanthus. The flowers of this specie are always pink on the outside and white in the center.
The form Micranthocereus polyanthus ssp. alvinii has the same flowercolours but the flower has a more 'open' structure. This form stays smaller and has mostly longer central spines.
The flowers of Micranthocereus flaviflorus ssp. flaviflorus and Micranthocereus flaviflorus ssp. densiflorus have flowers in the colours orange/red and yellow.
Micranthocereus densiflorus is the most southern population (25 km west of Morro do Chapéu) of the Micranthocereus flaviflorus complex.
The only 'exeption' in the flaviflorus complex is Micranthocereus uilianus. The flowers of this one look like the flowers of M. polyanthus but have a more 'open' structure.
Dit your plant had location data?
Can you show me a picture of your other M. polyanthus?
For nice habitat pictures of the true Micranthocereus auriazureus look at www.cactusinhabitat.org!

Re: Micranthocereus auri azureus
Here in southern Arizona the month of December is the prime fowering time for Micranthocereus species - they are my “Christmas cactus” for they seem to be particularly floriferous during Christmas week when they produce an abundance of very colorful flowers that persist for several days. I would like to contribute to this thread by posting photos of flowering plants of the species I grow.
I will start with Micranthocereus polyanthus:
