Uebelmannia pectinifera during winter

Post by gerald »

In previous years I've kept this plant indoors on the windowsill, and provided no water at all. It's the only cactus I have, apart from cuttings, that I bring indoors for the winter. During the summer it's grown in semi-shade in the greenhouse as normal.

It's never flowered so I was wondering what kind of treatment would be better, if any, in order to get some flowers next year.

You will be very dissapointed with the flowers when you do have them. Yellowish but very small indeed. Mine is about twenty plus years old. Got badly marked originally, but ok since. My Winter temps are down to 5c as plant is dry as a bone. Strangely it has grown a 2 1/2 inch dia.offset at the apex a few years ago and it has not been marked by the cold "yet". Cheers? Photo to follow if I can find it.

HI
I water mine all year round less in winter, they live in hot GH at 13c on a top shelf so they get lots of sun.
They flower most years & I actually got loads of seed this year, seedlings don't look anything like parents.
Mine flower March/April time.

Thanks for the info. I must say this species has one of the most striking appearances of all cacti. I hope for some flowers next year.

I grew some from seed many years go, and grew them in pure quarzite sand. They did really well in a SW facing conservatory, with winter lows down to about 5°C. Got them to about 7cm wide, 8cm high, and for some irrational reason I gave them away. I never got flowers from them though.
