Propogator or Windowsill?

Post by Duns »

I have just purchased a Stewart 52cm variable temperature propagator which is now sitting in my greenhouse with 2 trays of seeds in-situ and temperature set at 20 C. Looking forward to seeing how that develops.

However my question relates to seedlings (mixed) which I have in the house on a windowsill which were sown over 2 months ago with good germination success and are all at or over 1 cm tall. They are at a temperature which varies in the room between 17 and 22 C. I believe that they will get more light if I move them into the propagator in the greenhouse - would this be a recommended course of action?

Thanks

John

Assuming cacti , I personally wouldn't. We are hitting the low light levels now and if they try growing it can be weaker, straggly growth. My seedlings are left to have a winter rest now until spring.

Hi Iann - Sorry the seedlings on the windowsill are mixed cacti (I'll know what I have got when they get bigger - at least I hope so!)

That's quite tall for 2 months. Opuntias and some of the columnars could be healthy and that tall, but for most globular cacti that suggests some etiolation. Do you have a photo?

Most of those look OK, not etiolated (though not 1cm tall). If you want to keep them heated over the winter, to keep them growing, then they will need artificial light. There just isn't enough natural light in the UK at this time of year.

Phew that's a relief Mike - I have grow lights being delivered tomorrow (60w LEDs) so hopefully that will do the trick - propagator for them at the weekend then.

Thanks for your help and also Daniel
