Hello all, hello Philippe,
Thank you for your message. I already read this here in the past about Didymaotus: Steven hammer says that those plants love a heavy clay soil. However, I'm afraid, if I add some clay to the substrate, to get a mixture too compact to keep their roots alive...
How to grow Muiria hortenseae & Didymaotus lapidiformis?

I’m going to try one of mine in a mix incorporating some sterilised loam from my local molehills, which is a neutral clay...

What kind of cat litter do you use? Sepiolite (clay) or diatomite (silica)Ali Baba wrote:No alien technology involved! My Didymaotus are growing in my usual mesemb mix, 2 parts loam based compost (JI#2) 2 parts fine grit and 1 part cat litter. I sieve out the large lumps of peat from the compost before I use it.

I know this thread is a little old, but regarding Muiria, in this video, the gentleman talks about adding a few grains of salt with each watering.
I do not know the physiological reasons behind this practice (other than possibly to mimic habitat soil conditions), nor do I know if this applies to seedlings.

Hello Magi,
Interesting! However, I never read this before and I am not even sure it is necessary to succeed with this species...
Here are my Muiria hortenseae and Didymaotus lapidiformis seedlings:
Muiria hortenseae 'Český Granat' They are so red!
Sown December 19, 2017 (31 days old). Didymaotus lapidiformis
Sown December 20, 2017 (30 days old), a relatively quick grower.

I wouldn't worry about it for the seedlings, but salt seems to help the adults stay fat and happy without needing so much water. Not sure how that works. There are reports that gypsum does much the same thing.

Maybe there is some truth in that. My two Muiria's of almost flowering age suddenly dried out as if they were going dormant. They got an almost weekly watering as they have had for the past seven years. Luckily I still have two pots with both one plant of another batch of Muirias, of which one is also of maybe flowering age. Maybe I should start adding some salt to the water...iann wrote:I wouldn't worry about it for the seedlings, but salt seems to help the adults stay fat and happy without needing so much water.

Hello all,
Does anyone know the MSG bulletin number mentioned by the man in the video that Magi posted, where the article mentioning the addition of salt when watering Muiria hortensae can be found?
