Making a trip...

Post by Mike »

I’ve promised myself a trip to S. Africa and Namibia for a very long while indeed. And (after an equally long time saving) I’m now at the stage of seeking advice.

I suspect there’s little point traveling solo as I’d have little specific idea where to go. And probably even less certainty what I was looking at when I got there. So, I’m wondering about offering my services, such as they are, to a trip or group organised by someone with more knowledge looking for an extra pair of eyes, driver, etc…

I have some years’ experience growing an odd assortment of succulents, bulbs and other Southern African plants in a smallish greenhouse. But I suspect that barely equips me for plant hunting and identification in an unfamiliar location with a vast flora, even with a degree in botany from many years ago.

So, anyway, any suggestions and advice and contacts?

Cheers

As far as I know, going there for a field trip(s) on your own is a vaste of time, except for 'enjoying the nature' part, especially for newbies. I think that Gerhard Marx and Vincent de Vries used to lead field trips but I don't know if they do that any more...

Just crossed my mind.. maybe our member Derek Tribble (aka Apicra) could help...

Thanks

I've found contact details for Gerhard Marx and Vincent de Vries, and sent them a message. I've also been in touch with Derek...

All contacts and suggestions welcome!

I went (quite a long time ago) on a trip organised in conjunction with the Succlenta conference. It was excellent, with Graham Williamson and Inge Pehleman as guides, visiting Namibia and thence down to Cape Town. They seem to be infrequent occurences, however.

Another person to try is Trevor wray, I'm not sure where he is off to this year but he does a lot of cactus hunting, is very organised with data from other friends so he knows where he is going & what he expects to find.

varied collection of succulents and cacti but I especially like Euphorbia's, Ariocarpus and variegated agaves.
