The perils of ventilating the GH in winter...

Post by Chris L »

I decided to open the GH door for a while this morning as it is a nice sunny day. We are always told to ventilate the GH even in winter. Because of where the GH is it doesn't get too much sun in winter and will only catch a couple of hours during mid-day/early afternoon.

Imagine my horror when I've gone into the kitchen to make a brew and there through the kitchen window and the open GH door I can see the heater light on......

Hopefully it hasn't been heating my back garden for more than an hour - good job I spotted it or the next electricity bill may have been a little higher than normal.

Years ago I took Rene Giesler,s advice to open the greenhouse doors etc during Winter on days the sun was shining. This cured mould on my plants, and give the damp air a change. I have seen a change in my plants in the last few Winters for the better. I also try to remember to turn heating off then back on.

Don't just remember. Be smart about it. When opening windows, unplug the heater so you are sure it can't turn on. And leave yourself a note on your bed saying you should plug it in again, so you can take action after all. That way you can't forget, even if you did.
