Cotyledon Cuttings

Post by cactuspip »

I repotted my Cotyledon Orbiculata var. Oophytum a few days ago. Not surprisingly I now have plenty of leaves to try rooting down.
I would welcome suggestions from more experienced growers on the best way to go about this.

It will root down in pure grit fairly quickly. Commonly known as pigs ear! Just remember if you have pets/children, it's leaves are extremely poisonous. Make sure you insert the ovals the right way up! Hope this helps.

When you have got them going, I'd be happy to do a swap - I'd be interested to compare your plant to some other Cotyledons I have...

Cotyledon leaves don't usually fall off when repotting and are usually grown from stem/tip cuttings, I'm not sure if they can be grown from leaves as they can't be removed like Crassulas etc though I'm sure someone will add to this if they do grow from leaves. . Are you sure it's not an Adromischus Filicaulis with pale leaves?

I got my plant from Trevor Wray several years ago.
My presumption was that his identification was correct.

It's a good job nobody told me this back in 2007 when I was given a leaf of Cotyledon orbiculata which has grown into a very fine plant. I have tried it since to root more leaves without success but it certainly worked with this one

I have copied image off cacti.com to show the plant to which I referred. On this website it states" propagate by seed and easy to root down by cuttings. Plant leaves in good sandy soil and they will root".

Perhaps cactuspip can confirm if this is her plant?
