Ready to bolt

Post by agavedave »

This one may be up to something.

It has lived outside for the last 4 years with just an old bed sheet thrown over it when temperatures drop to freezing.

I bought it as seedling celsii albicans in 2002.

Dave

It looks in good condition so has survived winters well under its sheet! It does look as though something is happening, probably quite rapidly. Look forward to seeing its progress.

I look on this as an achievement because the plant has survived long enough to mature and is an expected stage of its life cycle. My interests lean towards breeding and these opportunities don't come around too often so I will be out there morning an night collecting pollen for storage and applying pollen from other plants that has been stored.

How do you keep getting them to flower  ? The fact that you got it as a seedling makes it even more impressive. Out of interest, what size is it? I have a similar looking mitis (the same sort of marginal teeth, roughly the same colour but slightly less rigid leaves) so I am wondering how close that could possibly be to flowering.

70 cm diameter by 45 cm from soil to highest leaf tip. The leaves on this are not particularly rigid and can break easily.

All of the ones that I have had flower have had a good soaking while outside early September, not sure if that makes a difference.

And what a difference a day makes!

Mine is about 56 cm high and 90 in diameter so maybe something could happen if I give it a lot of water.

Celsii is a species that does not die after its flowering but rejects so you will not lose this plant
