Dorstenia gigas

Post by ralphrmartin »

My Dorstenia gigas (originally from Tina) seems to be doing well in my new greenhouse - this year it has flowered for the first time. I wonder if it will shoot the seeds into other pots, like D. hildebrandtii? The latter can be a bit of a weed...

Oh boy, am I upset ....
No flowers on my plants and they are bigger, was this a seedling or rooted cuttings ?. I kept my plants cooler this year as supposedly that what they need to flower, what temp have you been growing it at ?.

You won't get seed as you need two, not self fertile

OK, I'm envious. And its official. :)

I got one d. gigas as a gift from my daughter but it didn't' adjust and has died a month or so upon arrival. I was so mad & sad because both, d. gigas and my daughter, are kind of my weak spots. But life goes on...

Anyway, good job Ralph, I'm happy for you. You have all the reasons to be proud of that beauty. Of course, if it didn't come from Tina, who knows if it would grow that well, so she has her share in that one too I'm sure :)

Outstanding plant Ralph, wonder if it's Welsh water that's helping lol. Cheers

Stunning plant Ralph.
Don't think I'd mind if it did spit a few seeds out! Looks really healthy.

Tina, not sure if it was a seedling or cutting - you didn't tell me when I got it from you.

My D. hildebrandtii is self fertile, so it was a big disappointment to hear this isn't.

It was nominally kept at 15C this winter, although I had a couple of colder days (the coldest days of the year!) when the boiler safety cut-out tripped due to the boiler getting too hot - it had not been set up right.

It was also kept dry all winter, and lost nearly all of its leaves.

In previous winters, it had been kept in the house, in a spare bedroom, and sparingly watered, and kept most leaves; I suspect the temperature might have been similar.

Anyway, Tina did a good job getting it up to 1/2 to 2/3 of its current size - I just hope I can keep it up.

Eric - it's not just the Welsh water - it's the ericaceous Miracle Grow I add to it!
