Succulents on TV again
Did others of you see the piece about "Surreal Succulents" on Gardeners' World last night (11th May)? It was included as part of the strand about exhibits at the Malvern Flower Show and is worth a look on i-player or the Sunday morning repeat. The nursery was not known to me until seeing this, but they specialise in Crassulaceae and market many of them in formats suitable for incorporation in home décor. The Malvern exhibit was based on using the plants for home decoration. It is for these sorts of uses that succulents plants are enjoying a boom in popularity and, as our new Chairperson said at the AGM, the BCSS needs to capitalise on this. The nursery is situated in Cornwall and they state that they produce all their own plants; they also breed their own Echeveria hybrids. This is in contrast to some other sellers who are taking advantage of the boom in this market by importing their plants from Dutch wholesalers.

Hi Terry,
Yes I saw it. Paul in Essex put me in touch with Surreal Succulents. It also came with a health warning! Completely justified. I have spent quite a bit with them. Superb service all the way. I would thoroughly recommend them. Let me know if you want cuttings.....
The whole bit on Malvern was well covered by BBC which I thought was encouraging for Chelsea. Etc. Pity it's such a long way away.

Yes, I saw it too. Indeed, they are becoming 'well known' as the leading specialist in Aeonium cultivars/hybrids.

I'll catch up tonight (there's s*d all else on tonight). I bought from Surreal Succulents many years ago on eBay, when he (Michael I believe?) had some very nice Echeverias. I seem to recall he looked after the gardens on St. Michaels Mount, but could be quite mistaken!

A very interesting item about Surreal Succulents and some lovely plants. I had never heard of them, even though we visit the Penzance area regularly on holiday, as we have family and friends there. We will definitely pay them a visit. Diane mentioned St. Michael's Mount, which is well worth visiting if taking a holiday in West Cornwall. The gardens are amazing and they have many Aeoniums and other Succulents growing outside.

I believe there are two fellas running this - the one I know is Danny. They have a retail site inside Tremenheere sculpture Gardens http://www.tremenheere.co.uk/explore which is one of the fines gardens in Cornwall.

I too saw Gardeners World and have bought from Michael on several occasions very good service. He also sells on ebay:-

You are right Diane he was on T.V a few years ago about St Michaels Mount and he was in charge of the Echeverias and Aeoniums there.

I thought it was a great feature and their nursery looks amazing. I keep meaning to order some Aeoniums from them but they have so many that I can never decide what to get.
Cacti and succulents also appeared in the part of the show about houseplants at the start, but they were being planted in a terrarium and placed on a shelf away from a window so it wasn't the most useful advice.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Surreal Succulents spot and have been eyeing up their colourful Pachyveria 'zooney' hybrid for over a month now in the desperate hope I can make room for one
