Aeonium zwartkop

Post by Eric Williams »

I have an old plant of Aeon. Zwartkop. It is about 3ft tall with 3 "branches" and quite large heads. It is getting out of hand and unwieldy? Due to its age could I remove the heads and re root them. I have successfully done this previously, but to very much smaller and younger heads. Thank you

You will have no trouble re-rooting these large heads. Taking off the heads and re-rooting is easy with Aeoniums of any type in my experience.
Obsessive Crassulaceae lover, especially Aeoniums but also grow, Aloes, Agaves, Haworthias and a select number of Cacti.

Suggest you leave until September as they seem unwilling to root in summer.

I topped and rerooted an Aeonium smithii earlier this year, which turned out to be very lucky - the top rooted, and promptly started flowering, which will, of course, result in its demise. Fortunately I kept the bottom which is throwing out some side shoots to replace it...

I got a few from Ralph earlier this year. They have been outside since March, and are noticably bigger and looking really good. They like to be out in the rain. At least until now. I suspect the summer will not be much of a problem too, definately as we have had already quite some warm days already. Basically it is already summer since about a month.

Thanks for that. I have just planted one that I grew from seed outside in my rock garden as I believe it to be pretty hardy to cold.

This is interesting. I'm stuck with two fat stems which will not root. They have been in greenhouse, outside and all different conditions but still no roots. Do I just persevere but keep cool not hot? I have three rosettes going nowhere either. Never had any trouble with Aeonium before. Any help gratefully received. They are all Zwartkop.

Paul, not sure if you are talking about A. smithii or Zwartkop. Anyway, I water mine throughout the year. A. smithii seems rather trickier to grow than quite a few other Aeoniums, but I'm afraid I have no special insights other than plenty of water in Spring when it is actively growing. But maybe that's what made it flower...
