The flowers can take up to a week to open, depending how warm it is. Being tuberous rooted the top growth does not need to be very large to flower, in fact parts of it sometimes have the habit of dyeing back many years.

Also they are terminal flowered. As you can see that flower is formed on the end of the branch and when the flower dies it leaves a hollow where it was so the branch can grow no further and will usually put out another branch just under where the flower was, or elsewhere to flower next year.

Five or six of my Pterocactus have flowered this year, they are often sad looking plants and seldom show bench material, but still interesting in spite of that.

This is as wide as I saw it open (it may have opened more yesterday while I was at work). Still, another genera to add to the list that have flowered in my collection  .

The flower bud has been forming on this plant for more than a week, and I've been waiting for it to open. It is a plant from someone else's collection that was given to me earlier in the year. Had to pop home from work at lunch time to take a photo. Good job I did as it was closing at 4.15 when I got home.

Tephrocactus sphaericus WG104 GD145 B . I assume the numbers refer to TSG members.

The WG refers to Renie geisler I believe and it is his personal collection reference number
GD could be Gérard Delanoy but not 100% as the number doesn't bring anything up

Rather pleasingly I spotted another bud on a different Pterocactus when in the greenhouse last weekend. This one has got a name on it. The flower (below) seemed browner than the first one, which was really rather yellow.

Below are the species I have bought. Anyone care to offer a suggestion what the first one - i.e. the pictures UP THREAD is, please? It must be one of the names below, being a piece that has fallen off and rooted.

Thanks. (tu) (tu)

Pterocactus australis - (this seems to have short stems on google).
Pterocactus hickenii - (this seems to have pinky flowers on google).
Pterocactus tuberosus
Pterocactus kuntzei MK394
Pterocactus kuntzei - (this seems to be the closest match on google)

Hi Chris,
as P. kuntzei is a synonym of P. tuberosus it is a flower of P. tuberosus.
