Disappointed

I grew the plant pictured from seed back in the 90's.

As you can see it is not what it was supposed to be.

A true G.Schuetzianum FR430 should have really beautiful PINK flowers. This just has the standard G.Monvillei WHITE flowers.

I am disappointed, but also very pleased with the plant's floral display. I will now have to try to find a correct one.

Graham Charles in his Gymno Book reduces it to synonymy under G. monvillei. The only picture of it I can find on the Web is this:-

Gymnocalycium monvillei has both white and pink flowered forms of course:-

It has never been found again anywhere near the location given for it, so it is something of an anomaly.

It should be subsumed under Monvillei, but it is such a distinctive plant when in flower that it deserves a place in any Gymnocalycium collection.

For G. schuetzianum Graham Charles goes on to say:-

"The plant remains mysterious. Many people have looked near Cruz del Eje to try and find the population but without success. The only recent reference I can find is a tantalising statement in Till & Neuhuber (1993) where they say "Near where one finds the isolated population of G. horridispinum one finds G. schuetzianum in a relatively small area". This must be west of Salsacate more than 80km from Cruz del Eje, but no more appears to have been written about this sighting"

The problem in S. America is you can have quite a few places with the same name, therefore sometimes there can be confusion as to which is meant, often it is not on the maps and is only a name the locals use.

It is possible the answer may lie in Ritter's Diaries, which are now online. However you would have to be able to read German in Ritter's handwriting and wade through quite a few diaries to find anything.
