S, S, S - Part Six

Post by AnTTun »

Some specific seed and a specific seller this time. Seller is Mauro Peixoto (http://www.brazilplants.com/) and he has quite a selection of specific succulents seed (besides many other, probably Brasil specific plants). I've ordered twice from him, first time it was various sinningia seed, second time it was dyckia seed. Seed wasn't really cheap but if its hard to buy it elsewhere then one has no choice :) Price was 3 euros per seed pack, each pack had 10-20 (!!??) seeds. Shipping was 11 euros, registered mail.

Mauro packs the seed his own way, he makes paper bags that are usually 1 cm tall and 3 cms wide and he closes them by tape. Not always easy to get seed out of them without damage, I had to be extra careful.

I had excellent results with sinningias, average germination was 90%. Then I've learned sowing lesson hard way: if you keep them wet, half of them will die, if you keep them dry, another half will die. So I'm taking a break from growing them from seed.

Dyckias were another story. 'Everyone' told me that if the fresh seed is kept dry and in the fridge its like brand new so I should expect excellent results. I got average of 33%, 3 out of 8 didn't germinate at all. I've been also told that they like it medium daily temp (25-26 C) and cooler nights (18-20), I'd say I was pretty good in simulating these but obviously I wasn't. And final 'told' was: they like air humidity, I sprayed them once or twice a day but seedlings kept dying. So I'm taking a break from dyckias too :) :(

Speaking of dyckias, there is another guy in Brasil (http://dyckiabrazil.blogspot.com/) he has some remarkable hybrids but his price is 3 euros per one seed. I doubt I'll ever buy them considering how good I was in sowing them so far, but if someone else does, please share your experience.

Sinningias like bright light and high humidity when young. The one time I had seedlings in lower light they languished and died. They didn't bother etiolating or stretching, they just stagnated and disappeared. Now I just sow them in a 5" pot in straight-up store-bought 'cactus mix' (at least that mix is good for something) to give them more root space, put it in a bag and keep between 15-20C at night and 25-30C during daytime. It takes 2-4 weeks for them to start, but a month after that it's a veritable jungle. It's entirely possible to get a 2" caudex within a year if you repot when the tangle gets too bad.
