on the tiles

Post by Lithos »

Found this tile a while ago, roughly 6 inches square. Clearly a transfer print over glazed. But what is it ? And when was it made ?

That is most attractive, Phil. Any idea of age? What does the back look like? Any indentations or pattern, which can sometimes be linked to a particular tile manufacturer?

I see cacti and succulents also feature on a number of modern tiles for those of you who might want a feature on your kitchen walls:

Daniel - I thought Taveresia too. Tony, it has no marks on the back at all, and I have no idea of age. Not new is all I know. Cactus and Succulent imagery is very prevelent in the U.K. at the moment - some great wrapping paper in Paperchase for example. How about a thread on Shirts ? Clearly Gordon Rowley would win, but inspired by him I have a few lurking in the back of the wardrobe.

Looks like a copy of a woodcut from one of the early Cactus & Succulent books. Can't see anything similar on Google, but you could try emailing "TACS" to see if they can help. Who knows it may be valuable.

This is indeed a woodcut, a copy of what is said to be Euphorbia officionarum from Gerard's Herbal 1597, chap. 476, "The poisonous gum thistle". It is reproduced in Rowley's History of Succulent Plants, 1997, p.46.

The stems appear just like Tavaresia but the roots are in appropriate.

Best wishes,

Spines in pairs, if I'm interpreting the image correctly. No telling whether that is just artistic license.
