Stapelia (?) Identification please?

Post by memrew »

Hi, im looking to ID this Stapelia (?) plant....

Bought from Doug Rowlands seeds about 15 years ago as Stapelia Hirstuita, Never thought too much about it but the flowers were never that hairy (although variable between plants), now Im looking to correctly ID it. Seems all the Stapelias are 4 sided stems, this one has 6 sided stems.... Am I right on that?

Any ideas? The flowers split and tear on EVERY flower on every cutting ever made, so its not just an odd shaped flower ;)

Maybe it's a hybrid? I don't recognise it, and am no expert by any means, but Stapelias do hybridise quite readily, so seed provenance isn't always as it should be.

Flowers look a little like red leopard, an intergenetic hybrid but not the same.

Anyone still got Red leopard as Colin is after a cutting.

Thanks, Im aware that they are all fairly variable and hybridisable (is that a word?), its just the hexagonal 6 sided stems than now make me think it ISNT a hirsuita, and the flowers of hirsuitas are much more elongated at the stem end compared to photos of all the others i have seen online....

Looking for a correct name before I sell these grown on cuttings in my shop!

This one seems to be a geniune Hirsuita.... You can clearly see the major differences...

The six-sided habit is puzzling, I have to admit. Could it be a Tavaresia hybrid?

I dont think the second one is hirsuta either, see below. hirsuta buds are almost spherical before they open

You may be on to something Diane, thanks!

It looks almost identical to the plant on this page...

Staparesia and Tavaresia are ones I hadnt heard of before, but it looks like this is it or at least very close!

Just wish the flowers on mine didnt rip themselves apart for every bloom :(

Funnily enough, I was reminded of Tavaresia by the flower, too.

That well may be it. I've recently acquired a Stapelia x Tavaresia hybrid under the name of 'Starfish' but the photo I have seen is not like yours. It's quite conceivable that there are several such hybrids around, possibly created in Eastern Europe. Just a thought.
