New fora? Forums?

Post by Bill »

Anyway You will note we have some new places to post, these are specific to particular genus or groups of plants and are linked to the specialist societies that exist for them.

They are open to all who are members of the forum, but you are free to carry on using the main forum if you wish there is no rule that you have to use the specialist forum.

Mainly Haworthia and Gasteria, a few other South African succulents and the odd spiky thing.

Any appropriate society that wants one just needs to make contact with me.

Isn't that all going to diminish the main one, or we'll have to check loads of different places to find things of interest?

Possibly but some of the specialist societies asked if the BCSS was willing to assist in setting up their own forums and it was felt this way would be the way most likely to meet their needs without reducing traffic to the BCSS forum and many other plant forums do have genus specific subforums.

I am afraid that I am not keen on the idea. I keep an eye on the main forum, but do not look at any of the other fora. The effect will be just to dilute the main forum. Specialist societies can use fora on their own websites.

FWIW, I'm with Patrick and Terry on this. But let's wait and see. Personally I spend too much time already on the internet without having more forum areas to have to click to see if there is a topic which interests me.

As Chair of the Mammillaria Society, and also administrator of the Mammillaria Forum - http://mammillaria.forumotion.net/ - it would have been nice to have been consulted about this.

If I had been consulted, I would have wanted to discuss this with the Committee of the Society, but my personal view is that since there is already a Forum, plus all the Facebook groups, another one is just not needed.
