Strange growth on Ariocarpus

Post by Herts Mike »

This is Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus skarupkianus grown from 2007 BCSS seed. The skarupkianus seems to have sunk without trace but on checking all my Aricarpus (40 of them) for buds I noticed this strange growth which I hope can be seen in the picture - it's the best I can get.

5 tubercles are sending out strange little offsets -

They look like offsets to me, is the main growing point still active?

Yes it is and using a magnifying glass I can see that the "biggest" offset has already split into three growing points.

Interesting indeed.

But the offsets are really firmly attached to the plant? Not that they are seedlings of spilled seeds, that germinated in the wool? I am sure that could happen. Although the odds of so many at the same time would be silly, stranger things have happened...
