A lot of effort for one flower

Post by iann »

Anacampseros comptonii eked out a flower today. I may have missed some because they only open briefly and I'm fairly sure that they don'[t open at all if the weather isn't just so. Even so, that's a lot of leaves for one tiny white speck.

See, this little seedling (less than 10 years old!) can do it with far fewer leaves.

Time to go and have a close look at mine to see if anything is happening...

The flowers on my similar looking A. rufescens 'sunrise' started to bloom in early July around 3pm daily and closed about 2 hours later.
They never opened when the sun was directly on the plant but just after the sun had passed overhead. I think I saw around 3 flowers in total but I harvested seeds from 8-10 pods.

Finally managed to catch mine with 2 flowers open, although as you can see, it has loads of flower stalks (2 plants in this pot, so I'm hoping the pot will be full of seedlings soon!)

I think I've missed some days with lots of flowers, and not particularly hot sunny days. Or maybe they just poked out petals to fool me into thinking they flowered. Just occasionally, it all comes together and I catch a special display.

No need for two of these to get seedlings. They're reliably self-fertile and self-pollinating. I suspect they don't even need to open the flower to set seed. Keep an eye open for the fruit though, its very fragile and tends to spill the seed.
