Good show of flowers from my giant cactus

Post by Paul in Essex »

Been a great year for flowers from my Trichocereus terscheckii. I flowered a bit in early summer than a major show last week - maybe cooler nights meant the flowers lasted 2 days instead of one. Grown a lot, too - now around 5m tall.

Super plant and lovely flowers, Paul. Does it get any protection in the winter?

Thanks!
I planted it in 2004, when it was just a baby at 9ft tall... it is in a raised bed at the base of the south facing house wall, so pretty much the best microclimate I could give it. My garden went down to -8C in winter 09/10, although probably only -7C for that bed, 2ft of wet snow, and it didn't get above freezing for 2 weeks day and night. Not ever been protected until the last 2 winters in as much as I construct half a polytunnel over the bed in which it lives and the top pokes out through a hole. The cover is for other plants n that bed, not for this one.

Some snow at the end of Feb this year.
