Myron Kimnach

Post by topsy »

The sad news has reached us today that Myron Kimnach died on 21st September, aged 95 years

From Jim Folsom:
Myron was Curator and Director of the Huntington Botanical Gardens for 25 years
During his tenure at The Huntington, Myron oversaw many important improvements,
including development of the Jungle, Subtropical, and Australian Gardens, as well as
creation of the Zen Garden and Bonsai Court, re-design and installation of both the Herb
and Shakespeare Gardens, opening of areas that had been closed during the Depression, and
construction of the Desert Garden Conservatory. Myron guided creation of the Gardens'
Herbarium, the Annual Plant Sale, the Succulent Symposium, and the Gardens' docent program.
Appointed to his position in November, 1962, by William Hertrich, Myron hired a generation
of the Gardens leadership, many of whom still work here (including me).

Myron’s contributions to botany and horticulture spanned decades before and after his time at
The Huntington, from an early age through to his last days. In addition to his accomplishments
at The Huntington, Myron was known and recognized for important plant discoveries, authorship,
participation in many professional and plant-related organizations, and careful editorship
(a 10-year stint) of the Cactus and Succulent Journal (U.S.A.). Myron was always the proverbial gentleman
and scholar.

To recall Myron’s many accomplishments, contributions, and kindnesses, the Gardens will host
a reception and bench-rededication in the Botanical Center on Saturday morning, 3 November, at 9:00

We've lost one of the true greats. Such contribution in so many areas.
