Identity?

Post by JaneO »

Bought this in g/c unnamed. It was small roundish blobs from central point. Repotted and it all stayed together as one plant. Over the summer it has detiirated. It's in g/h in full sun but on shaded side. It continues to look etoliated and sick. Name and helpful suggestions to restore health please.

Gosh, a sorry sight. How about an extremely etiolated plant of Rebutia fabrisii?
The flowers next spring will be a give-away.

You paid money for that? It's a very poor specimen of a cactus, but I agree with Tony that it's a Rebutia, whether it will ever develop more typical growth is debatable.

Diane,
It was not like this when I bought it! I do not understand why it has grown like this. It's been in g/h all summer, having been repotted into proper mix! It's not been in full sun, not over/under watered. But here it is! I'm just thoroughly bemused as to why! It's had perfect growing conditions....but it might have done better in cupboard!
Should I just bin it?

It looks like it would have liked to have been.

What fertiliser have you been using Jane? I need to know. I won't sleep tonight worrying that I might have bought some.

Apologies, Jane, for thinking it was like that when you purchased it  , but it IS severely etiolated, and has obviously not had as much sun as you thought. If it were mine, I'm afraid it would be a candidate for the compost heap, as I'm not sure it could be rescued.

Don't worry. Cut the end off the best looking stem, assuming the growing point is OK, and treat it as a cutting. You can still grow a nice plant from it, with enough light.

I have to agree that my first thought was Rebutia fabrisii too.

Thanks folks!
Ralph. Thank you for that! I'll give it a go.
I'll also ensure it has full sun if I get it going again......
Thanks for name. I'll give a label and hope!
