Re-awakening old post. I’m confident now that this is due to Brevipalpus sps mites. I’ve seen the nasty little beasties crawling around. Had to use a Jewellers loupe to see - using 30x or 60x. Seems odd that such tiny insignificant arachnids can cause such a lot of physical problem. I’m wondering if actually they are a vector for some sort of plant virus due to the amount of brown scaring that appears.
I’ve tried taking a photograph of one of the beasts using macro lens but they really are very tiny. Going to keep trying combination of neem oil and Isopropyl alcohol spray in the hope that eventually can eradicate.
Advice please: disease or corking?

That certainly looks like a Brevipalpus mite I’m afraid.
