Eriosyce?

Post by Mike P »

Anyone care to put a name to this? Seen on the road from the Cristo Redentor pass to Los Andes.

I’ve no idea I’m afraid. Nice looking plant. Excuse my ignorance- but how is the genus Eriosyce pronounced?

There is no correct way to pronounce Latin names and people just say it as they see it generally.

For Eriosyce I would pronounce it 'er ee o s eye ss' if that makes sense

I use one syllable less for simplicity, not for good Latin. Are you happy with calling everything E. aurata?

Shouldn't the final e be pronounced?

'eh ree oh sy see'

Maybe not

Since the word apparently comes from bastardised Greek rather than Latin I think we all have our options open. I'm with Al. ALthough I can see an argument for er ee o sigh ke.

I agree with ragamala over the origin and pronunciation!
Endeavouring to grow Aylostera, Echinocereus, Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Matucana, Rebutia, and Sulcorebutia. Fallen out of love with Lithops and aggravated by Aeoniums.
Currently being wooed by Haworthia, attempting hybridisation, and enticed by Mesembs.
