Cactus to ID

Post by Tina »

This was a recent buy from ELK, I loved the cephaleum on it.
Is it an Espostoa ?, I know it's a rooted top cut as it probably needs to be quite tall before it would develop the cephaleum.

Not an expert on columnar cacti and I've never grown this particular species myself, but I'm fairly confident it's Epostoopsis dybowskii. It's more commonly included in Espostoa (and it's also been included in Austrocephalocereus and Coloeocephalocereus), but the most recent DNA studies has it as a monotypic species in Espostoopsis.

It looks like what I know as Austrocephalocereus Dybowski, when it starts to grow it might continue with normal growth without any more cephalium.

Hi Tina
I would have thought the spines would have been white or lighter if it was dybowskii they are on mine, but I know Gene Schoeder has a plant labelled dybowskii that is similar to yours, certainly a Espostoa

Thanks for the very quick reply Karl, not a name that is easy to spell.

Stuart would it really revert to normal non cephaleum growth?, I will be very disappointed it it does

I thought I would add an update on my austrocephalocereus dybowski in June this year I noticed the fluff was looking disturbed in places, it wasn't until I noticed an ODD looking object in one of the other pots that I realised it had been flowering, its a night flowering specie so maybe its bats or moth pollinated.
Flower just starting to open

From the front I'm so pleased I purchased this plant I'm just wondering if it will branch or will need a bit of encouraging

and last the spent flower when I first found one it was older n darker I thought it was a dead slug yuck

HI Tina,

Very nice plant and it flowered for you!

This cereus does not normally branch, unlike Espostoas, but send up shoots from the base with age. As to whether the cephalium will continue to grow with the plant body is in the lap of the gods

Keep it warm.

Well done! I've got one about 4" tall, already branching from the base, but I don't know if I'll ever get it big enough to flower.
