Lambs’ “Illustrated Reference”

Post by steveresz »

A bit of a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone has ever produced a comprehensive index to all five volumes of The Illustrated Reference on Cacti and Other Succulents. (That is to say, an index down to species level.)

It’s a little awkward juggling five books to find info about a particular plant.

Chris L memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1428 did some fantastic work indexing the Reference Plates a few years ago, and on his web page on these he wrote:
"Illustrated Encyclopedia/Stapeliad Books
There are also five volumes of The Illustrated Reference on Cacti and Other Succulents and Stapeliads in Cultivation that are based on the same principle of the Photographic Reference Plates. In time I hope to include those in the lists."
I'm not sure this was followed through?

At the end of each volume, there is an index of genera, indicating which volume they are in, but not down to species level.

At the end of volume 5 there is an index to all five volumes, not down to species though...
First it was orchids, then, since c.2001, cacti and succulents. I'm into South African plants, mainly conos, lithops and haworthias, with a few cacti, especially 'posh' mamms, turbs and other smalls. Now it’s stapeliads as well...

Yes the lists exist! (tu) (tu) (tu) :geek:

https://cactuscorner.co.uk/reference-plate-guide/

The lists on this page are for the monthly notes that were issued in the Exotic Collection Magazine.

I did however produce a full list that covers the loose plates, the five volumes and the stapilea book.
ETA : and the 1935 WT NEALE book, on which the plates are based.

Happy to send that if that is what you are after.

I have also been thinking about turning them into a POD book on Amazon. Don't know if enough people would be interested to make it worth while.

There is now an alphabetical list as a PDF of just "Illustrated/Stapeliad" books which is available on request by PM or email.

The full list (all 80 pages) is currently under review at Amazon and will be available as an PRINT version and possibly an eBook version.

The Print/ebook version contains the full numerical list and a full alphabetical list, as well as a key to identify plates and other general information. The full book runs to 196 pages and is paperback.

Anyone interested please contact me for more information.
