Ceriod Cactus ID, please.

Post by Chris L »

A year or so ago Manchester Branch rescued a number of plants from a collection and this is one of the ones I saved. I don't know what it is. Originally both stems looked like the tall stem on the left (large bottom piece with new growth on top). Both stems were very yellow.

The stem on the left has stayed yellow, but thrown out another stem at the bottom. I am wondering if I should remove this and re-root it, and also do I chop the yellow top off the stem (it might produce an offset from the top?) Probably best to do it now/shortly, to let it have as long as possible to root over the summer.

The stem on the right has greened up and started growing. As it is in the kitchen it hasn't had too much direct sun and the new stem is thinner. Again it might be worth chopping once the other stem has rooted safely? It too could then produce more stems?

Any ideas what it might be, please?

I would hazard a guess that the original yellow growth is a mineral deficiency and since being in your care that has been rectified through either repotting or watering.

Personally I think that the yellow area detracts from the plant overall. If it was mine I would probably remove that stem low down and let the stump produce new growth. The growth on the right looks nice and healthy.

Hi Chris,
I think your plant belongs to the genus Pilosocereus.
The species is difficult to tell.

I chopped this plant as suggested and discarded the yellow bit. The other top is being rooted (down slowly) and the stem growing from the botttom had roots and fell off when I de-potted the stems. That is now in a pot of it's own.

So I kept the bottoms to see if they would sprout more stems and one of them is. But then look where it is of all the places - right in the gap between the two stems....... :???:

It is the "yellow" stem that is sprouting. Suppose the only thing to do is split them up into smaller pots (they are two plants), or cut the other stem lower.
