Repotting Opuntias the old fashioned way

As I stood outside the greenhouse in the late winter sunshine yesterday repotting and potting on some of the Opuntia collection using tongs and some degree of caution to little effect and repeatedly stopping to remove glochids, spines and the odd segment from hands and forearms my mind drifted back to how much tougher the previous generation were when it came to these things.

I speculated about trying to get Mrs P to join in as Mrs Leese does in the film but concluded that it was probably not worth the effort!

Ah, good old Worfield Gardens!

I note the General was not repotting the Opuntias himself.

I've even got a copy of his book which he was kind enough to sign for me when I was a kid.

The bit I remember best was the geriatrics dressed in ponchos and sombreros, playing Mexican(?) music...

Ralph, Worfield that takes me back a bit. I finally got my father to drive me down there from Lancashire in our old Austin A35 one day in the school summer holiday, I spent the whole afternoon trying to work out what to spend my pocket money on, while my father spent the whole time talking to the owner about the War. ( takes all sorts )
