Rich,
Don't treat your melocactus like Cactus, they like lots more water and a dribble during the winter and don't keep them cold

Thinking more about this, would a generous sprinkle of that ‘root grow’ stuff Monty Don shakes into holes before planting help, when left unpotted for a while?

I’ve used it in pots too I just can’t remember entirely which pots got it but I think one that did is doing ridiculously well
