fungicide for seed trays

Post by mking51 »

Hi
I have sown my cactus and succulent seeds using a windowsill propagation and the vast majority have germinated however despite sterilizing the potting mix things are looking a bit green. Should I use a fungicide and if so which one. I am an absolute beginner and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks

Algae are usually green and harmless to your seedlings.

A fungicide wont stop the algae (or cyanobacteria, what used to be called blue-green algae). However, it might still be useful to prevent damping off. I put 1/2 chinosol tablet in a bucket of water when watering.
(Hard to find here, but sold in Germany for gargle or something... - but don't get neo-chinosol which is something quite different).

Hi Margaret-

Are your seedlings uncovered at this point? If so, let them dry out a little bit so that the algae forms a crust. A pick can be used to gently lift off the algae, being mindful of the seedlings. Perhaps using 2 items, a pick the lift up the algae and maybe the 'pencil eraser end' of a pencil used to hold the seedling in the growing mix will work, pry the algae up and keep the seedling in place.

The algae attracts fungus gnats, who will slowly eat the roots and possibly the seedlings in the pot.

The algae might possibly overrun the pot too.

It is possible both the algae and the seedlings can exist in the same pot, but it could lead to trouble. Best to remove if you can.
