Pediocactus time

Post by iann »

Not the first flowers this year, but amongst the first every year.

P. nigrispinus (var. indraianus), the source of the sweet smell in the greenhouse

These are so beautiful Ian, it's great to see the cacti coming into flower.

Pediocactus are very tricky to grow, in my experience, so well done, Ian.

This is the P. indranus that I grow, it is FH5 from Idaho - a State that is not exactly known for its cactus flora. The flowers are really a cut above the usual pastel-shade flowers of P. simpsonii, they are about twice the normal size and have this vivid colour.

Smaller, fewer spines, and dark pink flowers is the standard description for var indranus. Mine is RP95, Central Lemhi county. The location is right, but it is quite big and doesn't have dark pink flowers. Other RP95 plants also have pale pink flowers. Only var indranus is known from that area, but who knows if the name is meaningful or the description is accurate for all plants with that name.

At the other end of the scale, P. knowltonii is about as big as it gets and still in a 2" pot.

That's the only one I've managed to grow - kept it for about 5 years from seed, until the damp got it in Cardiff.

Probably not cold enough for Pediocactus in sunny Cardiff. They're better off frozen!
