Antifungal fungi

Post by Terry S. »

I visited a wholesale nursery yesterday that produced a lot of seasonal bedding from seed. They incorporated a product called PRESTOP into their sowing medium to prevent "damping-off" diseases. This product was itself a live fungus called Gliocladium catenulatum which does no harm to the plants but bumps-off any harmful fungi. The product came in 1Kg packs and is presumably for professional use.

So has anyone had experience of such a product in raising succulents from seed and is there anything similar available on the amateur market?

It appears you can get the following shipped over from the US which seems to have similar properties, although it is expensive.

"Actinovate SP Biological Fungicide

Actinovate SP is a biological fungicide for the suppression/control of root rot and damping-off fungi and the suppression/control of foliar fungal pathogens. When used as a soil drench, soil borne fungi controlled include Fusarium, Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Phytophthora, Phytomatotricum, Aphanomyces, Monosporascus, Armillaria, Sclerotinia, Postia, Verticillium, Geotrichum, and other root-decay fungi.

The active ingredient in Actinovate SP colonizes the root system and protects it from harmful fungi. When used as a spray, Actinovate SP effectively suppresses/controls foliar diseases such as Powdery and Downy Mildew, Botrytis. Sclerotinia, Alternaria, and others. When applied to the soil Actinovate SP also breaks down minerals and micronutrients making them more available to plants resulting in increased size and vitality.

Plants and turf treated with Actinovate SP as a soil drench will become hardier, more vigorous and have a robust and protected root system.

Rate of use: for drench, mix 4-6 oz. per 100 gallons of water (1 tsp. per 2 gallons of water); apply at a rate of 1 gallon per cubic foot of growing media (saturate soil without creating run-off).

Active ingredient: Streptomyces lydicus 0.0371%"

Active grower of caudiciform succulents and mesembs. I don't really grow cacti (very often).

We use Actinovate on many edible crops quite a bit, and it works great,

we also inoculate long term crops with RootShield which is a tricoderma species.

I am adding Pro-Mix HP to my cactus mix which has mycorrhizae in it. There seems to be quite a few reports of cactus in dry soils benefiting from these fungi

Certainly sounds worth to try.

Now, Terry, Mike and Peter, if any of you could find something that kills algae but saves the seedlings...???

Prestop is available on eBay - just in rather larger quantities for the amateur. Perhaps someone on the forum could buy some and divide it up?

Gerald - have you ever used Relancer on seedlings? I've used something similiar (algae & moss killer) in the past and results were pretty tragic :) :( I've ended up with many, many & many dead seedlings. And I've tested it on
smaller group first.

Ralph - I've tried to find Prestop on UK eBay few times but no luck. Please paste the link if you have it?

Prestop seems available in the UK from microbewarehouse.co.uk (but I've no idea if a reputable company)
http://microbewarehouse.co.uk/shop/prestop/

Alternatively it seems available on ebay as Ralph mentioned,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Prestop-1Kg- ... 2738762599

Quite expensive at £60 for 1kg, & assuming that would be far too great a quantity for the average grower - the idea about clubbing together and splitting the price seems a good one. Also cannot find any obvious info on shelf life/storage conditions which might be of relevance if you wanted to use it over a number of growing seasons.

The pack that I saw at the seasonal bedding nursery was being stored in a fridge. It is a living organism, so I suspect that the shelf-life is not particularly long.
