Cat litter - quick questions

Post by Julie A »

Hi, just a quick question. I've seen people talking about Tesco cat litter for potting on the forums. I've just looked online at what they do and there are a couple. Is it the Odour Control Anti-bacterial vesion, please?

And if I use that mixed with John Innes 2 or 3, am I right in thinking, I don't necessarily need grit as well? I'm growing straightforward succulents, nothing complicated.

Thank you.

No, that's not the right one. The packaging has changed recently, so hopefully someone will post the correct name and maybe a picture. The litter is a brownish pink, hard granules, definitely not grey.

You use it to replace grit, although I also use a little grit or the mix doesn't weigh enough.

Great, thanks Iann. Will wait to see what people say. I'm guessing then, as you say it is pink, that it is molar clay? Thanks re weight as well, that is helpful.

Question to anyone that knows: I know it isn't the clumping one. So is it the 'Lightweight Cat Litter'? Seems to be the only other one they do.

That's the one. It's very useful. I use it a lot.

Liz, can I just check that you are responding to my later question about the lightweight cat litter? And do you know if it's molar clay as a matter of interest? Thanks very much.

I visited the large Tesco a few miles from me last Thursday, from where I had bought some cat litter a month or so ago. They had none in stock nor was there a shelf tag for anything that could be it. I concluded that they had discontinued it again, but haven't looked online to compare until now. I can't see anything that resembles the product I recently bought/have bought over the years. If it's this https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p ... /262681114 they've radically altered the packaging and massively reduced the price. Has anybody bought this?

The packaging of the one I use (and I assume others) is the same as the bag on the right.

Thanks for taking the time to do a photo, that is helpful. They certainly look like molar clay. Neither is currently on Tesco website though that I can see. None of the ones on there appear, that show the litter, to be pinkish in colour.

I might need to give them a ring to check.

I use this product from Ebay. It certainly seems as though it's a good product to use in a cacti and succulent potting mix. I'm going to try some seedling Lithops in it with nothing else and see how that works - as I'm very conscious of overwatering!
